The town of Evergreen was a picture-perfect postcard every Christmas. Snow blanketed the cobblestone streets, and every corner twinkled with the soft glow of fairy lights. This year was no different. Amelia, returning after years abroad, felt a mix of nostalgia and apprehension as she walked the familiar paths.
She remembered the last Christmas she had spent here. It was also the last time she had seen James. They had been childhood sweethearts, but life had a way of pulling people apart. The memories of their last argument, right before she left for Paris, still haunted her. She had always meant to write, to explain, but pride and stubbornness got in the way.
As she walked, Amelia stopped in front of her childhood home. The familiar wooden door greeted her, adorned with a holly wreath just like every year. Taking a deep breath, she knocked.
The door opened to reveal a middle-aged woman with familiar hazel eyes. "Amelia?" she whispered.
"Hello, Aunt Clara," Amelia replied, her voice quivering.
Aunt Clara pulled Amelia into a tight embrace. "We missed you, dear. Come in. It's cold outside."
Inside, the warm, familiar scent of cinnamon and pine welcomed her. The fireplace crackled, and the Christmas tree, adorned with years of memories, sparkled in the corner. Amelia's eyes wandered to the table where two wine glasses sat, one filled and another empty.
"James was here earlier," Aunt Clara said softly, reading Amelia's thoughts. "He comes by every Christmas, hoping you'd return."
Amelia's heart ached. "Is he still in town?"
Aunt Clara nodded. "He's at the park, like every year, listening to the carolers."
Without a word, Amelia grabbed her coat and rushed to the park. The cold air bit her cheeks, but she barely noticed. As she approached, she saw him. James stood there, the same as she remembered, watching the carolers. She hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath and walked over.
James turned, and their eyes met. No words were needed. They walked towards each other, and as snowflakes danced around them, they held each other close.
The heartbreak of years melted away, replaced by the warmth of Christmas reunions. The town of Evergreen, with its twinkling lights and festive cheer, once again became a witness to love rekindled and promises renewed.
